Super 8 to VHS or DV?

Hello all,

I really dont know if this is what you guys discuss here, but i really need some info/help on doing some transfers.

Ive got a LOT of super8 video filmed a long time ago, that i would love to get in DV format on a computer to make into DVD. I am basically looking for info on whether there is affordable equipment to do this. I've got firewire as well as a DV bridge already and am converting VHS to DV. Is there any piece of hardware that i can use to do the same to my Super8 video? (whether it goes directly to DV or to VHS first)

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated!

If its a one time shot, meaning you are not planning on taking any more Super 8 footage, you might want to consider sending the footage to someone and having them transfer it for you.

If you want the highest quality transfer/flicker free and frame accurate, the best quality possible is called a Rank transer. So far, the cheapest place I've found that does it is here...

You say Super 8 video? You mean Super 8 motion picture film? Right? Its very different from video. You can actually take it out and hold it up to the light and see hundreds of little pictures right?

Yes exactly, its film....

Its actually just simply home video stuff that my father filmed from when i was a baby and growing up and stuff. I believe hes got at least 50 or more reels of this stuff.. im getting into doing some VHS stuff but i really want to be able to do the Super 8 stuff as well... i just need to get it into DV so i can then compress to mpeg2..

Do you or anyone else know of a piece of equipment that isnt WAY too expensive that will accomplish this goal. Of course i could always send ALL those tapes to someone but i would love to be able to do it myself. And hey if i can do a good job i could offer those services to locals in my city that need some video transferred as well.

And yes i believe you when you say this place is great... I was reading through a lot of posts and i see some amazing information being posted, and to be honest a lot of it im not even sure what people are talking about. But getting into video production is a dream of mine, so maybe i can learn some stuff here.

Ok let me rephrase that,

its Super 8 Film ( the reels )

Will anyone give me any info on hardware i can purchase (new or used) to do these conversions.

what about that?
you take a 3ccd digitalvideo camera, firewire,a really white sheet of paper, and very important a projector, you film and record it flickerfree and import on your mac, i suppose, cut it compress it and put it on dvd, if yuo need better quality, put all the reals on one big an send it somewhere to transfer it.
tranfer is really expensive if you have lots of stuff, so think about it.

Let me understand what you are saying..

Basically, I would use a projector and then record the film into a digital video camera as its playing on a white background?

I understand this is an option and that sending it somewhere is an option as well, but i would really like to know if there is a piece of hardware that will do the transfer for me... something that i could put the reel in, and has some kind of RCA or SVID outputs on it. Does such a thing exist or am i barking up the wrong tree?
